"One of the best murder mysteries I've read in years."
Escape to the country? Or escape to murder?
November, cider-apple time, and Inspector Zig Batten is regretting his enforced transfer from urban Yorkshire to not-so-sleepy Somerset. When hikers discover a dead body, propped against a tree on a lonely hill, Batten needs every grain of his Northern sarcasm to keep his spirits up.
Is it a coincidence that the victim worked on the vast private estate of Wake Hall - home of a shifty horse-sales business run by a slap-happy Northern adversary?
What exactly is in the horse-boxes that trundle into Wake Hall?
And does the maverick Lady Wake know - or care?
Batten's search for the killer is plagued by tensions within his new team, disappearing witnesses, self-doubt, poisoned guard dogs - and a shocking revelation.
Then, as Christmas draws near, the human cost of crime begins to escalate...
Editorial Review
• “A glorious tale of murder, peppered with grit and wit.”
• "Beautifully written - acutely observed people and places...funny, moving, heart-warming, complex - I was surprised and indeed shocked at some points."
• “Intricate murder mystery – with lyrical passages that would grace a classic novel.”
From the Author
• 'A Killing Tree' takes place in the real landscape of Somerset in the West Country of England - famous for its apple orchards and vintage cider-makers.
• The sequel, 'A January Killing', begins with a 'Wassail' - an ancient winter ceremony in which music and drumming are used to rid the orchards of evil spirits. Shotguns are then fired into the bare branches to spark a fresh crop of apples. But one particular shotgun has more malicious intent...
A Killing Tree Detective Inspector Zig Batten 1 edition by Paul Toolan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I will admit that at first I was distracted from the actual story, by the the UK idioms that are very different from North American speech even though we all speak “English.”I read when I go to bed, and I was constantly reading lines to my husband, because I found the expressions so amusing. But all laughter aside, there is a real detective novel hidden beneath all those words.
Detective Zig Batten (CID) finds himself exported from urban Yorkshire to rural Sommerset in England. (One thing that surprised me was the difference in dialect between this two areas—it could be equated to the difference between west coast dialect in Canada and that of the Eastern provinces which are several thousand miles apart.)
Zig’s irreverent free thinking sort of got him in a bind in Yorkshire, and the move to Sommerset saves face for his career. He is a thorough detective, but he wasn’t above bending the rules when he thought it was warranted, so he has to settle in and make the best of his position in a new area.
On his first day a bunch of elderly walkers discover a dead man beside a tree on a hill on their walking trail.
Before he even gets a chance to settle into his new office, (that of the mysterious Chief Inspector Jellicoe) Zig Batten is thrown head-on into the mystery that unfolds through the many twists and turns in the happenings at Wake Hall and the other “entrepreneurial” illegal exploits in the district.
Beside the enthralling activities in the area, we learn a lot about Zig Batten through his internal dialogue. He has experienced a painful childhood, a failed relationship, and as the story advances, he is clearly wishing for the opportunity to have an ordinary life.
The characters in this book are perfectly drawn: flawed, but believable and they capture your attention. The mystery in this story is well crafted. It contains the elements of murder, betrayal, vengeance, and international criminal activity that happens beneath the very noses of the police, the people in the community and the people of Wake Hall.
A great read.

A Killing Tree Detective Inspector Zig Batten 1 edition by Paul Toolan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
A gruesome murder at the beginning of this book sets the pace but the names of the main protagonists, Yorkshireman Inspector Batten and his sidekick, Sgt Ball, introduce a thread of humour that continues throughout this absorbing crime thriller. The witty dialogue rips along, and Zig Batten's penchant for 'thinking out loud' adds to the intrigue. There were some parts that made me laugh out loud but, make no mistake, the main theme is evil and far from amusing. Nasty characters abound tempered by some goodies - all of whom would be right at home in a 'Midsommer Murders' plot. Set in Somerset the theme of this book is more believable than the TV series and contains a good deal more substance. An enthralling and enjoyable read.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I certainly don't intend it to be the last. This is a good police procedural with an interesting plot and like able characters. The characters are well drawn and have their own idiosyncrasies. This makes them real and lifts them of the page. Tool an h as an eye for detail and this comes across in his descriptions of the setting. The mystery itself kept me reading and I wanted to know more. It is not an on the edge of your seat story but I don't think it is meant to be. Overall an excellent book which I really enjoyed. So why have I given it four stars rather than five. I found the way that the way the main character spoke to himself using his own name started to pull me out of the story. This is a personal thing and others may not feel the same. Saying that this is a good read and I would not hesitate to recommend it. As I say I will be reading the next in the series.
One of the best British mysteries I've read in a long while. In complexity, plot and character development, author Toolan reminds me of Elizabeth George, high praise indeed.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It has an extensive and intriguing plot and a great cast of interesting characters. Keeps you guessing right to the end.
If you like British detective stories, you'll love this one. If you haven't tried a British detective story, this is a good one to start with.
Refreshing to come across such a great start to a series. The newly installed inspector, Zig Batten, comes across as a fully-realized character from the first pages. Bad guys vs. good guys is a general theme, but in this author's clever hands the mystery -- and the resulting stories and themes that swirl around it -- is satisfyingly complete. I think you'll like Batten's "sidekick," too.
A Killing Tree by Paul Toolan is a wonderfully written novel - full stop.
Presented in the classic mystery/suspense/detective style; it is a tour-de-force of the art, eschewing the well worn cliche's of the genre for a fresh perspective and deep character development. In this first story (of hopefully many), we are introduced to Inspector Zig Batten of the CID. Inspector Batten is an irreverent iconoclast with a persistent inner dialog which verges on the poetic. This introspective is skillfully woven throughout the story and thru it we come to appreciate and admire this complex persona as he (and his stolid Sergeant Ball) lead his team in the investigation of a mysterious death that occurs literally the same day the 'Yorkshire city import' starts his new job in rural Somerset.
The tale picks up from there as Mr Toolan crafts a well paced story full of complicated characters with everyday flaws and foibles that make their interactions believable and fascinating.
I gave this book a rating of five stars and very well deserved. I await the continuation of this series with great anticipation.
