The story is entitled Le Juif errant, but this is misleading; the figure of the Wandering Jew himself plays a minimal role. The prologue of the text describes two figures who cry out to each other across the Bering Straits. One is the Wandering Jew, the other his sister, Hérodiade. The Wandering Jew also represents the cholera epidemic— wherever he goes, cholera comes in his wake.
The Wandering Jew and Hérodiade are condemned to wander the earth until the entire Rennepont family has disappeared from the earth. The connection is that the descendants of the sister are also the descendants of Marius de Rennepont, Huguenots persecuted under Louis XIV by the Jesuits. (Sue never explains how a Huguenot family came to be descended from an immortal Jewish woman who never married or had children.) The brother and sister are compelled to protect this very family from all harm. After this first introduction, the two appear only very rarely.
The Rennepont family is unaware that these protective éminences grises exist, but they benefit from their protection in various ways, be it by being saved from scalping by the Native Americans, or from languishing in prison.

Now that this is available for Kindle, I decided to buy it. It was recommended to me years ago, but the library didn't have it & it was very expensive to buy in hardcopy several years ago. Now I will have a chance to see if it lives up to its recommendation.

I'm glad I did not pay for this book. The plot is too convoluted. The author pontificates on his belief in socialism going on for paragraphs at a time throughout the book. His anti-Catholic views are practically the basis of the entire book and reading about the evil Jesuits get tiresome after a few chapters. The fabrications are too fantastical and one gets annoyed with all the nonsense. After reading about 50% I gave it up. Mr. Sue is a mediocre writer at best.
How subtile the Devil is..,and this book reveals what the Holy Bible warns about seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. The sad truth that men can be decieved by Satan and think they are doing service for tbe LORD Jesus!
Truly, those who are the modern Pharisees and Scribes that twist God's Word, are to be identified as taking the Lord's name in vain. Blessed are those who follow the true words of the Son of God, the embodiment of Love and Truth. Instead of twisting God's Word to achieve or justify your desires, seek God's desires by drinking deeply of His Word. Those who would murder God's children, in their arrogance, tell God he made a mistake and they are the ones that will fix His mistake. Really?
never heard of this book before, but enjoyed every page. great history of the era written using fiction form but unmistakenly historical.
The fog index of this novel made reading it a tedious task. The Author appeared to be more interested in writing to impress rather than inform.
Wonderful, wonderful book! It explains a plot by the Jesuits certain ones of whom will stop at nothing to take the wealth of a people away from them.
Starts off alittle slow and jumps around abit but it's a great book. I'm reading a 2 volume hardback edition, (which the story of getting these volumes is almost as farfetched as some of the events in the book.) If you thought that the coincidences in Dickens novels was extraordinary wait till you read this. I'm only a few chapters into the second volume but I've fallen in love with it and hate myself for having waited so long to read it.
