Discoveries and Inventions A Lecture Abraham Lincoln Books

This is a beautifully executed, 15-page softbound reproduction (approx. 7.5 X 9.5 in size) of the lecture or lectureS Abraham Lincoln made to a few audiences in 1859 and 1860, between his unsuccessful 1858 Senate-run against Illinois's senior U.S. Senator and the more successful campaign for the Presidency against him and two others two years later. Titled "Discoveries and Inventions," the "popular lecture" was not well received, even though it was extensively researched and the rhetor was an inventor holding a patent; so, disappointed, he gave up that form of public discourse just in time to get a late, 1859, invitation to come to NYC in early 1860 to "lecture" on the issues of the day. He agreed to come to make a political speech (but no lecture), which he did in February, 1860, at the famous Cooper Union, perhaps the fourth greatest speech he ever gave, the one he thought was most responsible for his getting the Presidential nomination later that year. Had he given a lecture, especially one similar to that reproduced here from a 1923 monograph, it is likely he would never have been nominated for any national office -- or, at least, that is what I concluded in the first scholarly article on this least-known of rhetorical Lincolnalia four decades ago. -- Dr. Jim Vickrey, Ph.D., J.D., Montgomery, AL 36109, life-long student of the 16th President (jimvickrey@gmail.com).
